On Sunday 16th March I took a trip to the Hindu Temple, Gita Bhavan in Whalley Range. I wasn't sure what to expect and felt nervous at the idea of meeting indidviduals from a culture far from my own. I was actually probably more nervous having to get an unfamiliar bus to an unfamiliar destination! But after having made it all the way there, I wanted to make the most of my trip. You can definitely spot this temple from a mile off! It's bright orange and gold exterior definitely makes it stand out from it's drab surroundings. I managed to get some photographs of the temple's exterior but because of Manchester's awful weather, the pictures really don't do it justice. I was really interested in the repetitive sculptures on the top of the temple which seemed to be a strange contrast from the rest of the building. This is what you are first attracted to upon seeing the temple. The colours of the exterior were no different inside, with bright orange, yellow, red and gold everywhere. They are certainly not afraid of applying colour! I got the idea that this was their way of separating themsevles from the Hindu Gods and Goddesses as the exquisite colours, for many of them represent wealth, purity and beauty. This made me think about perhaps trying to use some gold in my own work, or atleast experimenting with it. However I think it would be a difficult colour to handle.
When arriving at the temple, I was greeted by the Priest and had to take my shoes off. I asked if I was able to take some photographs for an art project which he said was okay, but I don't think he truly understood, he seemed scpetical! I didn't get as many photographs as I was hoping to but enjoyed sitting there and taking in my surroundings. I observed as Hindu women lay out offerings for the various Gods and prayed directly to the statues.I also enjoyed looking at the traditional Hindu saree's but found it strange to see this alongside children in very westernised clothing. My trip really helped me to see aspects of my project that I had researched in situ and will definitely inform my work. I am aware that there are several other Hindu temples in Manchester so I will definitely think about visiting these on another occasion. The Hindu community seemed extremely welcoming and I would definitely take a trip there again. It was well worthwhile!
Gita Bhavan is not only a place for worship of the divine deities but it has become a centre of cultural and religious activities. It has created a sense of dignity amongst the Hindu population. It has been quite rightly remarked by one of visitors, "This temple will be a jewel in the crown of Manchester city."
